Design

In the design and construction of the treatment plant, the test of sustainability was maintained for every component part. At issue here were the following basic assumptions:

• Optimal room for nature during the abstraction of groundwater
• Use green energy wherever possible.
• Energy saving of 10% in the production and transport of drinking water
• Energy saving of 35% at the work places
• Use of sustainable, recyclable materials
• Limitation of maintenance
• Minimising waste materials and recycling these where possible

Design is one thing, but that is immediately followed by the construction phase. Naturally the necessary measures to combat environmental impoverishment also have to be taken here, such as:

• Minimising building waste material
• Separation of building waste into at least 15 fractions
• Lay down requirements for the use of building materials, machines and equipment with optimal ecolabel.

On further consideration of the effects of making drinking water, you reach the conclusion that, in particular, the use of energy for purifying and transporting water is the most important. That is why, with respect to sustainable production, the use of energy must first be reviewed.
